How Can an Architect or a City Planner Use a 3D Printer?

An ideal 3D printer for architecture must have a tall print envelope to print tall buildings with ease and accuracy.  An architect or a city planner (urban designer) can use a 3D printer to make a solid three dimensional model of their building or city plan.  This physical model can then be shared with investors or other clients for inspection and approval.  Here we share some photos of a 3d printer architectural model.   In this example, we have 3d printed a copy of “Metropolis.” As you can see, the Airwolf 3D printer XL is a great 3d printer for architectural model making.  The print envelope is 12″ x 8″ x 7″.

Metropolis

This Metropolis model is more than 7 inches tall.  The close up photo shows the details of the buildings-you can even see the tiny windows!  While printing this model, we paused the machine several times to change the filament color.  By doing this, we were able to highlight the different heights of the various buildings.  The result is a true three dimension, multicolored city scape.  The multicolored levels draw attention to the various different heights of the buildings and their affects on the urban landscape.

Metropolis is an original creation made by  ibudmen

He states, “In a futuristic city, sharply divided between the working class and the city planners, the son of the city’s mastermind falls in love with a working class prophet who predicts the coming of a savior to mediate their differences!” Metropolis (1927)
“My tribute to the wonderful age of sci-fye and modernism during the roaring 20s, it was truly a golden era for futurism and geometry in Architecture.”
Mr. Ibudmen, thank you for sharing this with the 3d printing community!
